Communicating Information

Can improve work using a range of editing tools

Has used a variety of different ways to present their work, e.g. from template letter, newspaper or poster

Can refine work by using: centre, tabs, block or highlighting and then changing style and position

Can use the cut, copy and paste tools correctly

Can change their work by deleting and or moving blocks of text on the screen

Can correct spellings with a spellchecker

Handling Information

Can enter their own collected information into a prepared data base program and been able find out the answers to questions, i.e. a single question – who is the fastest?

As part of a class activity they have helped to decide which questions to put into a survey

Has searched for information within a web site

Has used CD-ROMs to find information

Control Technology

Have planned and then entered a sequence of instructions to a floor robot or screen turtle to perform a specific task

Can talk about the commands used to control the floor robot or screen turtle and how they would amend them

Can record their instructions and edit them accordingly

Modelling

Can record useful information to solve problems in an adventure game or simulation

Can predict and explain the consequences of making different options or choices

Has used a systematic approach to solving a problem

Communicating Information

Can combine different forms of information from different sources  (e.g. text, tables, images, sound or video) for an intended audience

Can begin to produce work for a specific audience

Can add pictures, tables, graphs, to  my work

Can begin to produce documents in different styles e.g. poster, A5, letter, report, etc

Can send and receive an email

Can send and open an attachment within an email

Handling Information

Can collect, enter and ask questions about the data to investigate ideas and answer questions

Can enter information into a database file, designed by the class

Can check and edit information that has been entered for any mistakes

Can ‘sieve’ the database by using the ‘search’ command such as: ‘how many monarchs have been men and what their average reign was?’

Can choose an appropriate graph for the results that will be used within a report about an investigation or enquiry

Has taken part in deciding what questions are going to be asked in a survey, and knows that some of the information could be numerical, text, or from a list

Has used a search engine to retrieve information

Knows that the choice of words used in a Search Engine can affect the number and range of sites listed

Control Technology

Can use the Repeat and End options to make floor robot or screen turtle repeat a group of instructions several times

Can make and save procedures (programs) to be edited at a later stage

Can build procedures to control a lego buggy that can carryout a specific set of actions

Can save instructions as a procedure

Monitoring

Can use a datalogger to record the temperature, light or sound level over a period of time and can interpret the information displayed on the computer screen

Has used sensors in a Lego buggy to control its movement

Modelling

Can explore patterns and investigate the effects of changing some values in LOGO program and explain “What will happen if…” type questions

Has used a prepared spreadsheet to make predictions about what will happen if some of the data or formula are changed and can use this approach to solve a given problem

Can workout how the rules or variables change the computer model

Has used other programs that allow ideas to be tested e.g. a room designing package or spreadsheet

Can make a prediction about what they think the model will do when they change a value

Level 5

Communicating Information

Can produce work that is suitable for a specific audience and explain design choices for the presentation

Has tried a range of different solutions to presenting information and can talk about the benefits and limitations of each (i.e. web page, presentational software, DTP program, word processor)

Can define criteria to assess the quality of their own and others’ work

Can include animations, sound and video in their presentation if it’s appropriate.

Handling Information

Through class discussion, they have helped to decide what information is needed in order to answer the specified hypothesis

Knows that there are different types of information for the fields within the survey, e.g. text, numeric, data etc.

Has designed the data collection form using the computer

Has questioned their results and was able to confirm or deny their hypothesis

Can use information as part of a presentation suitable for the chosen audience

Has used the filter or search commands to refine the data in order to answer more complex lines of enquiry

Has searched large databases to find information

Can point out indicators as to how they know if web site is a reliable source of information

Control Technology

Can build procedures to control a piece of equipment or screen model and to test the accuracy of their instructions

Can use procedures within procedures in order to make the program more efficient

Can refine and improve the program explaining the choices they have made

Can use variables to speed-up the testing of the model
